Year 5 Learning Zone and Curriculum Overview
We have another fantastic half term in Year 5 packed full of amazing learning! Here is an overview what we have been up to.
English
The Jabberwocky has been our focus text in English. This nonsense poem, written by Lewis Carroll in 1871, tells the story a boy who battles and defeats a ferocious beast. We have had so much fun learning the poem off by heart, focusing on expression and intonation to really tell the story. Please listen to our performances below. Our unit has concluded with us writing a narrative version of The Jabberwocky with our own beastly creations!
Maths
Fractions have been the big focus in Year 5 this half term. We have represented fractions in many different ways, created equivalent fractions and used these to make comparisons. While Miss Lee’s group have then moved onto linking fractions to decimals, Mr Oates’ group have been converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers. Have a look at the pictures showing off some brilliant learning.

Science
3 2 1 Blast Off! We have been learning about all things Space in Science. We were luck enough to take part in an online workshop called Spaceship Earth where we learnt about how astronauts get into space and survive there. We have also investigated why we have day and night, the reason a year is 365 days and also created mini-booklets about the other planets in our solar system.
Geography
We have been learning about the continent of Europe in Geography during Spring 1 and this has linked perfectly with Science as we have explored the climates of different countries and related this to Earth’s orbit around the Sun. We have also researched famous natural and man-made landmarks in different European countries and the unit culminated with a collaborate project using Google Slides whether the learners created travel brochures for one of our focus countries.
PSHE
Focus in PSHE has been on Health and Wellbeing this half term. We have looked at why a healthy lifestyle can benefit us both physically and mentally, how a balanced diet supports our wellbeing, established rules for taking medicines and investigated the potential dangers that come with not following these rules and focuses in on our own identities: what makes me me! It has also been Mental Health Week during Spring 1 during which we explored the theme of belonging and identified places that make us feel safe and secure before drawing roadmaps to mark the places where we belong.

DT
5S were able to design, construct and decorate their bird houses over the last few weeks and I am sure you will agree form looking at the photos that they have done a brilliant job! Some of the birdhouses will find a home in our wildlife garden. It will be turn of 5M in Spring 2 to create theirs and we are excited to see what they produce.

Other news
5M have now completed their swimming programme and we are delighted to report that every single learner achieved at least 1 award with many of the children passing multiple! 5S will now begin their swimming lessons every Tuesday which will run until the end of the academic year.
When we return after the half term holiday, the holy month of Ramadan will have begun. Many of our learners will be fasting during this time and we would like to wish them and their families all the best during this special period.
Finally, we are very excited for the Let’s Go Sing performance on Monday 16th March. Although it is a shame that due to the timing of the event many of the learners will not be able to take part, all of Year 5 have really enjoyed learning the songs and I am sure you will join us in wishing the children who will be at the event the best of luck!
